Can I Lower Child Support in Utah If I Lose My Job?
By Andrew Fox, Utah family law attorney | Last updated October 7, 2026 Short answer: Yes, you can ask a Utah court to reduce child support after a job loss, but payments don't drop automatically. Under Utah Code § 81-6-212, you generally need a non-temporary income change of 30% or more and a resulting support difference of at least 15%. A reduction can only reach back to the month after the other parent is served, so file quickly. A layoff is stressful enough without a child
